I’m sure all of you have figured out by now that we are not out of the national championship picture. But of the 4 undefeated teams ahead of us, we may only have a shot at one of them if we win out… Alabama. We need to take care of our own business first and finish off the rest of our light schedule. However 2 teams could make our dreams a lot closer to a reality.
First off, the USC Trojans. Of those 4 undefeated teams I spoke of USC plays 2 of them, Oregon and Notre Dame. If USC could play like their preranking for a couple of games it would potentially leave only 2 undefeated teams around; Kansas State and Alabama. If it comes down to those 2 being the only undefeated teams, then the SEC champion would nearly be a lock to face Kansas State for the national title.
As well, let’s hope Alabama wins this weekend. If LSU wins then Alabama will likely just drop to #5 and stay ahead of us anyway. Not to mention perhaps keep the SEC from winning it’s 7th straight BCS title. We need to beat an undefeated Alabama in the dome just to make sure something weird doesn’t happen like a one loss Florida State or Notre Dame passing us. I can’t see how they would but you never know.
In 2002 our loss to Florida kept us out, in 2007 our not playing in the SEC title game kept us out. In 2012 we control our own destiny for the SEC title, but we would need help to reach our ultimate goal. The odds of 2 of the 3 other undefeated teams losing, us winning out, and actually beating Alabama are slim… but it’s fun to think about.
